Due to further damning evidence that Infact has uncovered and now presented to Parliament, our leading MP Teresa Pearce was successful in tabling a question to the Prime Minister during Prime Ministers questions, which resulted in Infact securing a personal meeting with Health Minister Jeremy Hunt . As soon as we have further news we will update everyone
We would like to thank Teresa for her continued support
Below is the transcript
Q5. Teresa Pearce (Erith and Thamesmead) (Lab): Historically, 500 babies per year are damaged in the womb by sodium valproate, a drug prescribed for epilepsy. Although GPs are now more aware of the risks, the national archives show that the risks were well known by drug companies and Government as far back as 1973, yet mothers were kept in the dark. Will the Prime Minister urge his Health Secretary to meet me and a delegation of mothers who are affected by this issue to discuss their case?
24 Jun 2015 : Column 882
The Prime Minister: I thank the hon. Lady for raising this case. I am not aware of the specific drug she mentions, but I will look at it very closely. As someone who had a son with very severe epilepsy and knows how little we really know about many of these drugs, I will certainly fix the meeting between her and the Health Secretary so that they can make progress on this issue.
Back in August 2013 INFACT had a meeting with Medicines Healthcare Regulatory Agency about the issues that had arisen from our filming of BBC1 Programme Panorama “Pills in Pregnancy”
It was at this meeting with Head of Pharmacovigillence Dr June Raine and her team that Janet and I stated there needed to be investigations and it was from here that a European Review into Sodium Valproate was initiated, as it is also prescribed throughout Europe and also globally. MHRA accepted our idea and following more meetings with them came changes to the Yellow Card Scheme and the confirmation of the percentages of how many were affected by Valproate.
Holland and France were also involved with the European Review into Sodium Valproate as they are apart of Europe. We provided this Review extensive evidence and also a National Survey which was very much taken into account as the results of this were appalling and provided a huge insight into the prescribing and also failings of Valproate.
12 months later and the results are as we predicted, that Sodium Valproate needed much stronger warnings when being prescribed to ladies who of child bearing age. It has also been given a Black Triangle Symbol which means that it is being monitored.
We have provided MHRA with information to distribute to the NHS and have also been working with the Department of Health so that information will be distributed to Health professionals about the new recommendations in the hope that more ladies will be warned about the devastating effects of the medicine during pregnancy.
